Bright grins and silence greeted me today when I walked into first period. A trio of students held up white boards reading "Good Morning, Ms. Leonhard!" I paused for a moment, startled by the atypical calm before remembering that all around the nation students were observing the Day of Silence. It's impressive to watch a sixth grader move through classes and meals without speaking. But the why behind their activism is far more inspiring.
The kids broke their silence at the end of the day with a student led poetry slam. One of this year's student hosts chose to come out during the event two years ago. Her brave transparency as a 6th. grader profoundly influenced our campus. The message she shared then continues to challenge us today.
