Poetry in Translation: Micaela By Andalucia

Over half of my students speak Spanish as their heart language. I'm incredibly grateful for the wealth of Spanish poetry and Spanish-English/English-Spanish translations available. While at La Cosecha Bilingual Education Conference, I met the author of this excellent bilingual poetry text.

Here's a blurb about the author, Andalucia:

Adalucía Quan is the author and illustrator of The Magic of Clay, a very popular ceramic book for readers of all ages. Her second title La chica de Mendiburo is the winner of the 2007 International Latino Book Awards for Best Young Adult Fiction Book in Spanish. She is also the author of The Song of the Coconut, winner of the 2009 International Latino Book Awards for Best Educational Children’s Book in English. Adalucía’s latest titles are Jesus’ Birthday Gift (2012) and Micaela: Despertar en poesía/Waking Up to Poetry, winner of 7 awards at the 2013 International Latino Book awards. Adalucía is a ceramic artist and graphic designer. Born in Miraflores, a beautiful neighborhood in Lima, Peru, she came to the US fresh out of high school to pursue a college education. Adalucía holds a BS in Art and Modern Languages Education from Florida International University, Miami, Florida and a MA in Art Education from The University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM. Adalucía is a great storyteller and teacher. Her ceramic pieces tell many personal stories and her poems are inscribed on her pots and sculptures.

Despertar en poesia/ Waking Up to Poetry is a vivid portrayal of a young Latina woman appreciating day-to-day interactions with nature and society. This book has won several awards. We will be enjoying it during morning advisory and a few workshop mini-lessons. Every piece lends itself to teaching tone, imagery, and mood.
