"Just Because" Poems

“Just Because I’m Mexican” by G.

Just because I’m Mexican

Doesn’t mean I’m poor

Doesn’t mean I don’t know English

And dosen’t mean I like to work

Just because I’m Mexican

Doesn’t mean no Job

Doesn’t mean love tortillas

And doesn’t mean I like to drink

Just because I’m Mexican

Doesn’t mean I don’t like to learn

Doesn’t mean I jumped the border

And doesn’t mean I run from the cops

Question: Who are you to Judge?

Question: Why would u ask me

Question: Why do u make fun of me

Statement: Im my own person

I mentioned in my last post that providing a little bit of structure in the poetry writing process is a great way to engage reluctant or beginning to intermediate writers.

Recently students wrote “Just Because” poems as a means to exploring our complex identities.  The format is simple.  My kids loved it! Here are few samples (original typos included) with the template below:

“Just Because I’m a girl” By N.

Just because I’m a girl

Doesn’t’ mean I feel powerful

Doesn’t mean I don’t have to fallow rules

And doesn’t mean I don’t respect others

Just because I’m a girl

Doesn’t mean I don’t help others

Doesn’t mean I don’t have feelings

And doesn’t mean I’m rude

Just because I’m a girl

 Doesn’t mean I like pink

Doesn’t mean I don’t need consequences

And doesn’t mean I don’t play sports

Question: Who are you to judge me?

Question: Why do you think I’m different?

Question: Why do you care about how I’m like?

Statement: I am my own person

 “Just Because [I'm] Aferican-American” by K.

Just because im aferican american

Doesn’t mean the police could hate on my ple

Just because [I’m] aferican American

Doesn’t mean we werer all born from the hood

Doesn’t mean that people can’t judge us for eating KFC

And doesn’t mean we play other sports but basketball

Just because I’m aferican American
